EVENT REVIEW: The First However Often FRACAT Networking Get-Together

FRACATs First Networking Meeting

Yesterday was a great day of networking for me and, hopefully, for a few of you.

I got to meet with some great bloggers in the morning and a bunch of you last night (That’s them on the left, minus one - a Mr. “I’ve Got To Get Home” - who didn’t make the picture. I hope you’re happy, Mark!) for a little networking and group discussion. Thanks for coming, by the way!

All this led to the question of when we can get together for a little FRACAT-led networking again. That is an excellent question, which I thought I’d pass along to all of you.

No matter where you live, please let me know:

1) What topics could be covered in a networking meeting that would be interesting / valuable to you?

2) Are you currently involved in any kind of networking group? If yes, what kind?

3) Understanding that networking is more of a long-term giving activity than a short-term receiving activity (see Jason’s most recent post for an expansion on this thought), what could anyone do to make networking better, easier, more valuable for you?

Thanks for your help on this, by the way!

Oh - click “MORE” to find out about the bloggers I met with and whose blogs you should be reading!

Here are the up-and-coming bloggers that I got to spend some time with:

Mike Shaffner, an IT guy who, as a result of a job search, started blogging about strategic business / IT stuff. Great blog with some great information from the perspective of a job searcher.

My only complaint (and I always seem to have one, don’t I?) is that the subtitle of his blog sounds like something out of a 1960’s era military job descriptions manual: “Management of Information Technology for Strategic Alignment with the Business”.

So, Mike…..how about something snappy like, “Making IT Work For Your Company” or “Driving Profit Through Technology” or even, “Using All That Expensive, Blinky-Light Equipment You Already Bought To Actually Make Money”.

Just a Thought…

Jason Alba, owner of JibberJobber, in from Salt Lake City, UT. He was the guy who was the kick in the butt I needed to put together this networking event in the first place.

JibberJobber is basically an advanced, web-based contact tracking / mapping tool specifically designed for job seekers and people wanting to manage their careers. Jason has made the JibberJobber toolset available to everyone free of charge. You can pay to get even more functionality, but it is very usable for free.

If you don’t have your own high-end, expensive contact management program (and no, Outlook doesn’t count), you need to be on JibberJobber.

Kent Blumberg started blogging in relation to getting a new job and, appropriately enough, taking charge of his own career. I’m pretty sure I can’t describe what it is that Ken does, but suffice it to say that he’s a manufacturing industry executive.

However, his blog is a sort of a productivity think-tank for high level executives of all industries. As we discussed at our get-together, we’re not sure why, but he is one of very few high level executives that is blogging about this stuff. And it doesn’t hurt that he’s pretty darn smart, either.

Don’t let the fact that he apparently only has about 5 pictures to go with his posts and that he actually said in public that he really likes FRACAT fool you. He’s a smart cookie!

It WAS great meeting you yesterday for both breakfast and dinner. I’m sure there is a great blog post that could come from your “paper” breakfast — I’m just not sure what it is. I think I’ll leave that one to you.

Thanks for the tip on the title. I’ll have to work on that. Better advertising always helps.

    Mike
