CAITBHW: Day Last - The Promoting Part of your Boss’ Head
So, here we are at the conclusion of Crawl Around Inside The Boss’ Head Week.
But we still haven’t gotten to the really positive steps that you can take to get that raise and get that promotion.
So, as our final day in Climbing Around Inside The Bosses Head Week, let’s see what the boss is looking for to promote.
HOW TO BE UP FOR PROMOTION WITHOUT WORKING 120 HOURS A WEEK
Most people assume that you have to be at work all the time in order to get the boss’ attention and get that promotion / raise.
I won’t say that there aren’t bosses like that. I worked for one who was of the opinion that “this job cannot be done in less than 12 hours a day and at least a half day on Saturday [side note - he meant all that time was spent in the office. I might have to do some work ‘on my own time’, too]”. My response, “You aren’t paying enough for a 64+ hour work week.”
Needless to say, I didn’t work there long. However, most bosses don’t really expect you to spend your life at work.
There are specific things that you can do that your boss will notice and appreciate enough to get you that raise or promotion:
- Taking Charge of Your Job - Whatever the areas of responsibility are in your job, you own them. You make sure that you get your job done well with a minimum of hand-holding. “Well” being the key word in that sentence.
And if there are things that are going undone that aren’t specifically in your job description, but fall into “your area”, you take them and get them done.
- Good Attitude - Even if you get your job done, doing so with a bad, grumbly, complaining attitude will get you eliminated from the promotion list.
- Respectful of Other People - This means other people’s time (as in, “not being late for meetings”), other people’s property (as in, “don’t take things that don’t belong to you”), and other people’s feelings (as in, “don’t make people cry just because you can”).
Generally, you should be making the lives of the people you work around better rather than worse.
- Looking Out For The Company - In doing your job, you should look to be doing the greatest benefit for the company. That means making them the most money with the least cost / risk and building up the long-term prospects of the company. If you’re doing this, you’re never doing the wrong thing.
- Don’t Lie, Cheat, or Steal - This is a mostly positive list, but you’d be amazed at the people who do these things. So, in your job, make sure that you don’t lie (to make you look good / make other people look worse), cheat (take other people’s work / claim credit for things you didn’t do), or steal (office supplies, long distance, computer parts, lunches).
As you can see, this isn’t such a long list of difficult things. However, the biggest change that can make all of this happen is with your attitude.
Bosses can sense bad attitudes miles away. Decide that, no matter what your situation, you will have a good attitude. That’ll make all the difference.
At least, it will inside your boss’ head.
