How To Put 9.3 Hours (or more) of Work Into An 8 Hour Day
Frequently, I encounter candidates who are upset that they have to spend so much of their time in the office. Often, it is accompanied by, “Why does my boss’ poor planning mean I have to stay late?!?”
Unfortunately, you can’t control your boss. At least, not until I finish my book, “Mind Control for Career Success”.
Anyway, for those who have too much to do and have to spend too much time in the office, I’ve got one statement for you: STOP THE WILFing!
Of course, to find out what WILFing is, how to stop it, and how to gain another hour and a half of productivity a day, you’ll have to read on.
WILFING THE DAY AWAY
What’s WILFing? It’s described in new research on British workers that was just released.
Says the article:
Workers confronted with the almost unlimited pool of online information become distracted and begin “wilfing,” short for “What Was I Looking For?”.
Wilfers lose two working days a month to aimless browsing, with men being the worst offenders, the study said. Shopping sites are the most distracting.
And, being a modern day malady, WILFing is also discriminatory: “A third of men quizzed said wilfing through tempting adult entertainment sites had damaged relationships with their partners.” Mean ‘ol adult entertainment just jumping onto my screen unbidden….
HOW TO FIT 9.3 HOURS OF WORK (OR MORE) INTO AN 8 HOUR DAY
Let me be honest about this research. I think it’s wrong. I don’t know whether those Brits are just slackers or the researchers were giving them the benefit of the doubt, but 2 days a month seems a little low to me.
Perhaps it’s just that we try harder in America, but I’ve seen people at work, and 2 days a month seems like nothing for the average American worker. We’re the most productive people in the world, so I’ll be it’s more.
That being said, even if it is as low as 2 days a month, that’s 10% of the average 20-day working month! In other words, it’s at least 80 minutes a day that we’re WILFing away. For those of you who aren’t good at math, 80 minutes is an hour and 20 minutes.
In other words, a little more than 16% of your day (on average) is eaten up by aimless wandering around the Internet. Now imagine what would happen if you were to stop all that WILFing….
Imagine the surprise and consternation on your co-workers faces when they find out that you’ve been getting a ton more work done than they are, but still not spending all the extra time in the office.
Imagine how impressed your boss will be when s/he finds out that your productivity has suddenly jumped and you’re ending the week with your work done and not excuses as to why you couldn’t do it. That’s promotion material, there.
Personally, I’m not sure. I’ll check into it later, but I have to check out this hilarious YouTube video I heard about…
