What Is Your Purpose In Your Career?

What is the purpose of your career? Do you know?[Just a note, on Monday, I might sound preachy and you might experience burning and itching. If so, just come back tomorrow and it’ll be all better.]

Frequently, when I talk to candidates, I’ll hear the phrase, “I’m never gonna get rich doing this!”

Obviously, many of them are just joking, but I always ask, “Is that why you’re working?”

More importantly, is the goal of working to be rich? And, since I can’t resist creating trouble, is that what God has planned for you? Or me?

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO DO?

While there’s nothing wrong with money (it’s the love of money that, I hear, is the root of all kinds of evil things), does God have planned that we’ll all be rich?

In fact there are many churches that preach that, if you’re in the Will of God, then you will receive monetary reward. That is, you might not be rich, but you’ll be financially very well off.

I believe, if that were true, there would be no reason for this verse:

“But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ ” Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?”
-Romans 9:20-21

So, the real question is, “What is your Purpose in your career?” Is it “noble”? Is it “common”? Do you know?

Since my general philosophy is that life is better when you work with God rather than against Him, I also think it’s worth finding out what your Purpose is.

Unfortunately, unlike when we’re talking about general job-seeking stuff, I don’t really have a good answer for you. I don’t know what God has planned for you.

But I encourage you to go find out. Pray, find what you have a passion for, find out what you’re talented at, and see if that is what God has for you.

It won’t be an easy “5-step-plan”, but it’ll be worth finding out in the end.
