Good Stuff From the Web for August 31, 2007
If you’re looking for a job or want to improve your career, there is so much good information out on the Internet that you have no excuse for doing dumb things anymore.
Well, I guess you have one excuse. But it isn’t one you want to be putting on your resume.
Click to continue on to the 10 pieces of good stuff from around the web for this week:
GOOD STUFF FROM THE WEB FOR AUGUST 31, 2007
- For those who somehow missed it, I was interviewed on The Recruiting Animal Show a couple of days ago and the audio is up. We talked about stuff for job-seekers, recruiters, and bloggers. In other words, you - whoever you are - need to listen.
- Here’s some simple advice on dealing with wimp bosses from Your HR Guy.
- Are you about to start up a new startup? The Instigator Blog gives you A Crash Course in Startup Assumptions and Lessons Learned. Let someone else make the mistakes and you learn from them for a change, eh?
- Sick of all of the hype around the iPhone? This is just for you. (hat tip: Slyvisions)
- Guerrilla Job Hunting has a great chart showing what qualities you’re supposed to have for each of the stock phrases in a job listing.
- HotJobs recently posted a list of In-Demand Jobs That Pay Well. It’s all supply and demand. If you want to be paid more, work in a job where they’re desperate for you to work there.
- CNN apparently did a whole special on How To Work At Home. Some good information here if you’re headed that direction. (hat tip: Your HR Guy)
- Got a technology project that’s running behind? Need funding for a new technology startup? All you need is the right words and everything is fine. And er…this tool combined with a few buzzphrases and a good name for your project / company and you’re all set! (hat tip: Smogger)
- People keep working on their video resumes. That’s good. Sometimes they’re entertaining. That’s good, too. Sometimes the entertainment value works against you. Like in this video resume for an IT guy who is breaking into his company’s computers. It’s probably all scripted and fake, but it still won’t get you a job. At least, not in IT.
- And last, but not least, here is your science lesson for the week: Plasma is basically an ionized gas. And you can (but shouldn’t) make it with your microwave like these folks did.
The fusion referred to here is the solid (toothpick) burning into a gas (with the flame) and the gas being ionized into Plasma.
Who knew a microwave was so cool? Call Bill Nye the Science Guy!
(And no - this has nothing to do with job searching or career improvement. I just thought it was cool.)
That’s it for this week! If there’s anything interesting out there that you need to know about, I’ll bring it to you next week.
Or you could shoot me an e-mail (dsweet-at-fracat.com) if you’ve seen something out there (or written something) that everyone needs to see.
Enjoy the Search!
