Job-Seeker / Career-Improvement Quicklinks for Friday, September 14th, 2007

Friday QuicklinksAnother week, another hurricane (though Umberto turned into a Category 1 just as it hit land). Yes, here in Houston, we had another hurricane hit nearby and our weatherpeople got in a frenzy. Typical Fall week in Houston…

Anyway, this week in the quicklinks, you’ll find some
and more.

So, read on. It’s just a little rain. Really.

GOOD STUFF FROM THE WEB FOR SEPTEMBER 14, 2007

  1. Too cheap to buy my book? Well, here’s a 49 cent e-book about resumes and cover letters. Is it good? I dunno. I’m too cheap to buy it…
  2. If you are desperate for an interview, Kansas is guaranteeing interviews in the industry of your choice. There is a little catch. You have to join the military…
  3. On the off-chance that you’re a board-level technology hardware engineer, here’s a list of interview questions and answers from Hardware Guru. I suppose you could also fake being a hardware engineer with these, but I’m sure none of you would do that.
  4. If you’re building up a Facebook presence (which is not a bad idea as someone who needs to network - and you do), be careful about doing too much networking. As the Harry Joiner, the “Marketing Headhunter” experienced, it’ll get you banned! Did some LinkedIn employees just start to work for Facebook or something?
  5. If you were dealing with Nida Adeser (a headhunter) about getting a job in Australia, shes….uh….she’s going to be a little busy for awhile. Like, the rest of her life. Boy! Remind me not to recruit in the Phillipines!
  6. Thinking about changing careers? Careerbuilder is launching a new career-change portal called CareerPath. There’s all sorts of tools to figure out what you’re best suited for.
  7. You know Scott Adams, right? The Dilbert guy? He’s got some career advice for you. At first I thought, “What can a guy who couldn’t survive a “real” job and draws blobs for a living know about career stuff?!?” However, upon reconsidering, a guy who can get rich off of blobs might be just the guy to listen to. A lot of the comments are great, too!
  8. Do you feel like you’re missing something at the end of an interview when the interviewer keeps asking, “Do you have any other questions?” It’s almost like they’re saying, “You aren’t asking the obvious questions, you moron!” Well, fear no more! Joe Turner, though he works for Monster, has some must-ask interview questions that’ll make you look good and might actually tell you something about the job, too.
  9. From our friend Jason Alba, here are the reasons he hates job-seeker blogs. And, perhaps more valuably, what you can do to change yours to be better.
  10. Finally, I thought I would give you a little taste of my world. Normally, I wade through a whole lot of blogs and articles to bring you these quicklinks. Including blog postings from aliens. This painful entry is either created by a computer or someone who learned English at a graduate school. The funniest thing to me is that it is copyrighted…

  11. That’s it for this week! If there’s anything interesting out there that you need to know about, I’ll bring it to you next week.

Or you could shoot me an e-mail (dsweet-at-fracat.com) if you’ve seen something out there (or written something) that everyone needs to see.

    Enjoy the Search!
