What Are You Representing Today?
When I was a salesman for a number of different technology service organizations, it was always interesting to hear about my clients’ impression of the company I worked for.
Usually, they would describe my company as concerned with their needs, responsive to their questions / problems / issues, and able to tackle just about anything. So, in short, “helpful”.
However that was not the company that I knew. The company that I knew, on several occasions, acted more like the several-times-the-legal-limit drunk-last-night-and-now-seriously-hung-over parent of a two-year-old who just wants the noise to stop, the room to stop spinning, and to have a few moments of peace.
The difference in the impressions came from the fact that I was the most common face of my company that they saw. So, in the end, I was the company as far as the client was concerned.
Everybody is representing somebody every day of their lives. So, the big question becomes who are you representing today?
Read on to try to figure this out…
A PRAYER FULL OF BILE
Recently, with all of the 9/11 commemorations, I heard a common (and disturbing) statement from a number of people. The statement went something like this: “Our prayers go out to the brave men and women who have died as a result of this war and their families. Our prayers are with the men and women over in Afghanistan and Iraq. And we hope that Bush and Cheney rot in Hell forever for getting us involved in this unjust war.”
Without getting political about this, my first reaction to this statement was: “I need to know the god you serve. Because I want to be sure to stay far away from your god who encourages hatred and wishing Hell on people.”
The good news here is that I know they aren’t serving my God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because His Son said, “Love your enemies”. I may not be good at it, but that’s what He said.
WHAT DO OTHER PEOPLE THINK ABOUT YOUR GOD
This whole situation got me considering what other people think about my God. Much like when I was a salesperson and ended up being the company to the client, I am God to a lot of people that I engage with.
What actions that I engage in am I tainting Him with? Do I spew hatred in the name of prayer?
In your work situation, what do people think about your God? If potential employers knew the difference between the “you on paper” and “the real you”, would they want to honor and worship your God?
For the record, I have failed this test miserably on many occasions. If you have, too, then there is only one thing to do. Thank God for His forgiveness and pray that He would guide you (and that you would accept His guidance) in your work today.
And then go to it.
