Have You Ever Wondered: “Why Me!? Why This Job!?!”

Have you ever asked Why Me? Why This Job?Once upon a time many, many years ago, I had interviewed extensively for a combination sales and technical position. The man who did most of the interviewing was actually the boss 2 levels up (because the manager position was currently open) and we got along very well.

They made an offer and I accepted. Upon reporting to my first day of work, I met the new manager who was actually a longtime salesperson at the company. Usually, that would be good news as salespeople understand other salespeople.

Usually…

THE WORST MANAGER ON EARTH

As it turns out this particular salesperson was a very bad manager. No - that doesn’t really give the true flavor of “bad” that he was.

This was the sort of manager who you always requested him to put anything you ever discussed into an e-mail to you so that you’d have a record of it. That way, when he did the exact opposite of what you agreed to, you’d have something to show him (or HR) when the inevitable showdown came.

Him: “Nice day, isn’t it?” Me: “Uh…how about I get back to you on that? Could you send me an e-mail to remind me?”

If a bad management could be represented by size, a normal bad manager would be the size of a grain of sand. This fine manager of mine would be the size of the sun.

That may not actually be big enough, but you’d think I was exaggerating if I went any bigger…

“WHY AM I IN THIS POSITION?!”

Have you ever had an experience like this? An experience that makes you wonder, “Why me, Lord?!? What have I done to deserve this job / manager / situation?!?!”

The good and bad news is that these questions are the doorway to great spiritual answers. The kind of answers that you need to hear and hate to learn.

Whenever I’ve been put in place with a colossally bad manager or workplace, God has said, “I put you there for a reason. One which you might not ever entirely understand. But that’s okay. You don’t need to. All you need to do is

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.

This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.”

-Proverbs 3:5-8

So, why are you in your current position?
