Job-Seeking / Career-Improvement Quicklinks for September 28, 2007

Friday Quicklinks Hello again, ladies and gentlemen.

The good news is that it’s already Friday and you’re so close to the weekend that you can taste it.

The bad news is that you’re about to see some of the most interesting stuff available on the web and are going to be unable to tear yourself away from your computer screen for the next few hours.

Anyway, this week in the quicklinks, you’ll find some more evidence that Penelope Trunk is on drugs, a great way to manage your social networking presence in 10 minutes a day, one of the most exciting jobs on the planet, and much more.

So, read on. You weren’t going to get anything done today, anyway.

GOOD STUFF FROM THE WEB FOR SEPTEMBER 28, 2007

  1. You know those Citibank identity theft commercials? It turns out that identity theft is pretty easy when you tell the whole world every little detail about your life. Be careful with Facebook. You could end up with a different kind of friend…
  2. Everybody had a financial place where they want to be. Let’s call it their “comfort zone”. If people get out of their “comfort zone”, they will do drastic things to get back there. However, Christine over at Create Business Growth shows us how comfort can be fatal to your success.
  3. Want to attract as many people who can give you your next job as possible, but get lost in all of the vast social media landscape? Never fear. Ben over at the Instigator has posted a great 10-Minute Daily Guide To Building Your Social Media Presence. And I know you’ve got 10 minutes a day.
  4. Have you ever gotten the feeling that you’re repelling people somehow in interviews and phone conversations? Jason Alba talks about this phenomenon in his post Are You Bleeding? In it, he says that we recruiters are like sharks and can smell blood in the water. Unlike sharks, as soon as we smell it, we turn and swim away! It’s true - be sure you know what kind of impression you’re making.
  5. There has been a lot of talk of why there aren’t “enough” women in the technology industry. It turns out that it could be a confidence problem. Unfortunately, I’ve seen this phenomenon in action. Come on, ladies! Just push the button! You (probably) won’t break anything!
  6. Since I was talking about knowing your brand the other day, I thought I’d give you 10 very specific ways to build your brand. Okay, I stole these from Kent, but he doesn’t mind. Or, at least, he probably wouldn’t mind if I asked him…
  7. Who are you talking with about your next job? Keith Ferazzi (of “Never Eat Alone” fame) recommends you talk to your boss about it and he’s got a point. It’s not like anyone is under the impression that you’re going to stay in your current job forever. And you can actually take away fear if your boss knows what you’re headed for.
  8. Here’s a pretty cool idea from an advertiser on Slyvision: swap out your cellphone and plan for another one without paying any penalties, fees, or other ridiculous nonsense. I can see this catching on, which of course means that you’ll see a new clause coming in cellphone contracts banning this practice…
  9. I’m afraid that I can’t stop writing about Penelope Trunk. And how she’s on drugs. Here are her 5 Ways The Job Hunt Is About To Change. I guess she still hasn’t gotten over her youthful idealism because three of the five are “Companies will stop writing stupid ads”, “The quality match will take center stage” and “The workplace will get great”. She obviously hasn’t been “inside the beast” in an HR department at a company of any size. But she does have a column in the WSJ. Perhaps I should throw some blinders on and start writing unrealistic articles about the way things ought to be in the land of candy canes and gumdrops…
  10. And lastly, if you’re looking for a job where the excitement level is high, there’s never any boredom, and the pay is pretty good, look no further than this posting for a Stuntman’s Apprentice. Filling out paperwork doesn’t look so bad now, does it?

  11. That’s it for this week! If there’s anything interesting out there that you need to know about, I’ll bring it to you next week.

Or you could shoot me an e-mail (dsweet-at-fracat.com) if you’ve seen something out there (or written something) that everyone needs to see.

    Enjoy the Search!
