Ladies and Gentlemen,
I wanted to let you know that I’ll be taking a vacation of sorts this week from the blogging here on FRACAT.
Like most of your vacations, this one will be a working vacation. I’m taking the time off so that I can get the New, Improved FRACAT on-line and ready to go.
Everything here will remain up and running, but you won’t see new content until next Monday, October 29th.
Thanks for your understanding and I look forward to seeing you next Monday!
Dan

I know it seems like I’m dead, but it isn’t true!

Another week, another hurricane (though Umberto turned into a Category 1 just as it hit land). Yes, here in Houston, we had another hurricane hit nearby and our weatherpeople got in a frenzy. Typical Fall week in Houston…
Anyway, this week in the quicklinks, you’ll find some
and more.
So, read on. It’s just a little rain. Really.

A while back, my friend Mike Schaffner talked about making a great work environment - something too many employers haven’t read.
And while he was talking to the employers out there, it made me think of a question I have asked to many candidates, usually after they’ve told me horror stories of how they’ve been treated for years: “Why are you working there?”
The answers that I’ve received are a little scary. Most of them boil down to, “Well….I have a job here that was open when I was looking. They pay me.”
In other words, they are expecting great things from their career, but refuse to be in charge of it. Instead, their employers, recruiters, or - even worse - blind random chance are in charge.
I can tell you how to find a better company to work at, but it’s time to take charge of your own career.

Like many of you, I’ve been sick of those two people smiling at each other in the FRACAT header for quite awhile.
Since I’m working on the new FRACAT and getting close to finished, I thought I’d give you a taste of what is to come with the new header. Or, at least, give you a break from those two folks you’re used to…
Enjoy the new header!

By now, you can’t help but have heard about the latest women are paid less than men study. The twist on this one: it happens their whole lives, even if they get better grades.
While the reality isn’t quite as stark as the headlines (see below), it is still true that women make less money than men in a comparable job.
Is this discrimination? I’m not sure and I’m not particularly qualified to say. What I can say is that there are recurring reasons why women are paid less than men that I see time and again.
And in life you’ve got two choices: Whine/Complain/Fight against the way things are OR Adapt to the way things are so that you can overcome.
In the spirit of the latter, today I’ll talk about WHY women get paid less.

Many of you might not be aware that FRACAT has a lot of Romanian fans. Well, it’s apparently true.
You see, they leave all sorts of comments on the blog that seem to get caught in the SPAM filters. Not one has made it through, but those Romanians are nothing if not a determined lot. Every day, more comments.
I’m writing this message because they, apparently, don’t have a high opinion of you and I want to make sure they know about your true and wonderful traits.
So, this is To Romania….

How dedicated to finding a job are you, really?
The reason I ask is because there are jobs all over the place. And, frequently, your job is in another city. Or another state.
Are you willing to go get it? Do you know how it could accelerate your job search?

Most people think about asking for raises as a high-stress, sweaty-paln, potentially career-ending event that they’d rather not do.
However, as we’ve all heard, there’s more than one way to skin a cat (although I’ve never tried even that one way, whatever it is) and there’s more than one way to get a raise.

Getting out of Billable Slavery isn’t that tough in theory - just quit!
However, most people enjoy eating on a regular basis, having a roof over their heads, and not requiring a loan to get gas for the car. Also, you might actually really like the job in general, but just not that pesky “Billable Slave” part.
Well, the good news is that there are ways around all of this. And I’ll even share them with you. As the young whippersnappers say these days, “That’s just the way I roll.”
