The good news is that it’s already Friday and you’re so close to the weekend that you can taste it.
The bad news is that you’re about to see some of the most interesting stuff available on the web and are going to be unable to tear yourself away from your computer screen for the next few hours.
Anyway, this week in the quicklinks, you’ll find some more evidence that Penelope Trunk is on drugs, a great way to manage your social networking presence in 10 minutes a day, one of the most exciting jobs on the planet, and much more.
So, read on. You weren’t going to get anything done today, anyway.
Wow! It’s amazing how a simple tazering can destroy all sorts of careers. Some even before they’re started.
And, more importantly, it just makes the week fly by. Especially if you taze yourself “just to see what it’s like”. You’ll lose all sorts of blocks of time…
Anyway, this week in the quicklinks, you’ll find some interview tips, cover letter tips, Penelope Trunk goes insane, some good videos, and more.
So, read on. I promise to keep my tazer in its holster.
Friday already? Yes, it’s true. Those 3-day weekends can speed along Fridays faster than a weatherman can get into the path of a hurricane.
This week you’ll find some myths about being a home-based worker, how to use LinkedIn for your career, why you need a recruiter when you’re not looking for a job, a true story about the worst boss in the world, how to speed up elevators, and more.
If you’re looking for a job or want to improve your career, there is so much good information out on the Internet that you have no excuse for doing dumb things anymore.
Well, I guess you have one excuse. But it isn’t one you want to be putting on your resume.
Click to continue on to the 10 pieces of good stuff from around the web for this week:
It’s time again for my weekly roundup of employment, job-seeking, and career advancement posts from around the Internet.
Here’s what caught my eye this week:
HotJobs has an article on When Taking A Pay Cut is a Good Move”. I’m going to talk about the “returning to the workforce” one sometime soon, but it is an absolute!
“Dr. Salary” has a great list of Temp Jobs That Pay Well. If you need a little cash and are looking for something to do in the meantime, you need to see this list.
InfoWorld Magazine has a great “Ask the Headhunter” column on Can you spell ILLITERACY? How much do you rely on spellcheck?
I read a post by “The Joel” and the answers by the (primarily) software development community. Methinks there might be a reputation problem in my industry. Either that or some people don’t understand what a recruiter is. Nah…couldn’t be that.
Sick of dressing up for interviews? How about if you could have them all be virtual interviews? Would your avatar still dress down? I thought so…
Can some college kids teach you something about working a Job Fair? These sure can. You don’t know how many non-students coming to a job fair don’t know the basics that are taught here:
That’s it for this week! If there’s anything interesting out there that you need to know about, I’ll bring it to you next week.
Or you could shoot me an e-mail (dsweet-at-fracat.com) if you’ve seen something out there (or written something) that everyone needs to see.
Enjoy the Search!

It’s time again for my weekly roundup of employment, job-seeking, and career advancement posts from around the Internet.
Here’s what caught my eye this week:
Sue Shellenbarger has an article in the Wall Street Journal that says it’s okay to cry at work. Oh, goody. More drama in the office. Is that a step in the right direction? (hat tip to Employee Evolution)
Do you need an executive coach? If you’re an executive, the answer is yes. Kent Blumberg has extensive executive experience and has started his executive coaching business. Here is what sets him apart. Okay, so this was 3 months ago. I’m just getting caught up. Sorry, Kent!
Speaking of bosses, everyone knows that employees need to (subtly) manage their managers. However, there’s good ways and bad ways to do that. HotJobs has an article about 5 Myths of Managing Up that should help you get it right.
You know all of that education and training that you went through in order to get a good job? It may have gotten you the job, but according to Rob over at BusinessPundit, it
ain’t your brains that is going to get you a promotion. Like the company doesn’t eat up enough of my time…
And I think Rob has something against smarts, because he posted a follow-up that says It Doesn’t Pay To Be Smart. And my mom was worried that all that drinking was going to kill braincells. Turns out, that’s a good thing!
If you’re a heavy social networker, keep in mind that can be used against you in the jobhunt. Brian Kreuger of CollegeGrad.com has a little wake-up call for you:
For some people, hearing me talk about improving your resume and focusing on results is better than Ambien (all the sleep, none of the sleep-driving!). Well, maybe hearing it from a guy from GetHiredNowTV will help:
Feeling alone in hating your job-search? Don’t. As a SimplyHired ad points out, “Job Search Sucks”:
And, because I’ve apparently been WILFing, here are a couple of unrelated sites that I still thought you’d like:
Got a lot of crap on your computer? Especially all of that trialware garbage that comes with a new computer? An IT guy got sick of it, too, and developed the PC Decrapifier. Free and useful ain’t a bad combination.
Lastly, I saw an online site for a new backpack for your kids. Let me give you a small hint: if your kids need this backpack, there’s something wrong. And that something is named you.
That’s it for this week! If there’s anything interesting out there that you need to know about, I’ll bring it to you next week.
Or you could shoot me an e-mail (dsweet-at-fracat.com) if you’ve seen something out there (or written something) that everyone needs to see.

Have you found that you’re cranky and grumpy all the time at work? Check out this article from Yahoo! News that says it’s all about combinations of what you eat. Or, perhaps you could print the article out and anonymously put it on the boss’ desk.
Mike over at Episteme floats the idea that business can move faster with quick touches rather than endless meetings and bureaucracy. In other words, everyone that makes up a company is becoming a “mini-entrepreneurial force”. Or ought to.
The first one is a hilarious look at multiple job interviews that I found on Chris Russell’s blog:
The second one is about the “Nametag Guy” that I found out about Andy Sernovitz’ Damn, I Wish I Thought of That! blog. If this guy can make a job out of wearing a nametag everywhere, then you can make a job out of just about anything:
That’s it for this week! If there’s anything interesting out there that you need to know about, I’ll bring it to you next week.

In any case, here’s another batch of news from around the Web for the Job-Seeker and Career-Improver:
It’s always good for people being interviewed to see what is behind the questions that they’re being asked. While this site is aimed at the Spa business, the interviewing piece is the same as any other business. Owner Zahira Coll talks about Interviewing Know How and again in Part 2.
And, from your side of the desk, here is The Guerrilla Guide To Interviewing. It’s from a software developer’s perspective (which is good if you are one), but even if you’re not, it makes you think about the questions you ask during an interview.
Before you look elsewhere, check out the job possibilities at your company or office, says Gayle Lantz, president of Work Matters Inc., an organizational development consulting firm in Birmingham, Ala. It’s all right to let your manager know you’re interested in more challenges or a different position.
“Good bosses welcome motivated people who want to move up and through the organization,” she says.
There’s an interesting new (and free) job-search tool in Hound.com. It searches only employer-based job sites (as in jobs.employer.com) because, to paraphrase the site, there are more jobs (because it’s cheaper for the employers), you can avoid nasty headhunters (though you still have the HR problem), and they are the most up-to-date (varies by company). Definitely worth adding to your arsenal.
Your HR Guy talks about How To Break Into HR. Just to be clear, he isn’t talking about the more traditional, “How to break into HR so that you can beat them about the head and neck.” This is about a career in HR…
17 Essential Tips for Getting That Dream Job from The Simple Dollar. It’s all good stuff, but if you remember, “It’s not about you, it’s about them“, you’ll be way ahead of most people.
